Barbaro Updates: 348

Tim's updates are now here.
Barbaro updates are now here.

Update 2251: Del Mar's synthetic track is playing slower than many horsemen are used to and its causing some adjustments to trainers' approaches: Adjusting to Polytrack, excerpt:

Bob Baffert, who trains for Zayat, said the synthetic track may lead him to buy a different sort of yearling or 2-year-old than those with the speed-influenced bloodlines that have become so dominant in California racing.

"I know if I buy a fast-looking horse and I put him on dirt, he'll be a fast horse," he said. "Now, you need a turf-influenced pedigree. I've got some horses that it will move way up. The jury is still out on this."

Ray Paulick looks at an industry without leadership: Commentary: Scandalous.

Good Morning FOB's

Strategy for Thursday August 2

Things are moving slowly as usual. Don’t be discouraged….this is how the process works! Hopefully we will see some movement in the House over the next day or two. As most of you know by now, an amendment is being added to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill that will change the original language. This is called the Spratt-Whitfield-Rahall-Chandler Amendment. Instead of posting lists today, we are asking you to call all representatives and tell them we urgently need their support to pass the Spratt-Whitfield-Rahall-Chandler Amendment that will put an end to horse slaughter for human consumption. Please call early since we don’t know if this will be brought to the floor tomorrow and we must flood their offices with calls for support until the vote takes place.

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven that this the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

House Members and Senators will be working out of their District Offices from August 6 to August 31. Now is the time to call for an appointment and meet with them in person. There is no more effective way to get your message out than a face to face meeting. You have the best chance of meeting directly with them during this month. However, if that is not possible, please arrange a meeting with their District Manager. Some of you may want to form groups for these meetings. It is usually easier to get appointments to meet with your legislators in groups of 3 or 4 constituents.

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do and have a great day!

Good morning all

Firstly, special thoughts for those in Minneapolis - I have just been looking at the horrific pictures.

Glorious Goodwood continues today with Lael Stables' Enticing favourite for the 5 furlong sprint.. There is also the 2-mile Goodwood Cup as the feature race. We started with a 2 mile 5 furlong race yesterday and the turf (naturally watered) seemed perfect - the horses weren't coming home either too tired or jarred up.

##Jean Nolan: I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures; here are some more:

Good morning, God Bless all of you in Minneapolis.

Maybe today will be our day for the horses, keep calling and faxing, we have the right to have our voices heard.

Praying for good news today.

The House is in session
Representatives are at their DC and
Georgetown apts and townhouses
They are full of
Their own importance
After a long day of
Accomplishing
Nothing
They eat a good dinner
Maybe have a drink
Smoke a fine
Illegal Cuban cigar
The ladies head for the spa
Maybe a manicure and pedicure
One has to look
Ones Best
On C-Span

A new day
Men wearing their fine suits
And woman dressing in designer clothes
Wait for their cabs
Or limo service
To take them to
Capitol Hill
The women checking their
Hair, making sure
The fine scars
At the hairline
Are covered
From the recent facelift
They try to smile
At their reflection
In the mirror
But their faces are frozen
From botox injections
So they think smile
But the result is not
Exactly a smile..
The men are adjusting
Their silk ties and admiring
Their gold cufflinks
They too check the mirror
The gray at their temple
Make them look
So distinguished

As the gavel sounds to open
The day's proceedings
The chute opens
And the wild eyed trembling
Horses
Are driven
To their death
Not an honorable
Death
They are cruelly
Slaughtered
ALL DAY

Meanwhile the
Men and women
Are still rambling
About nothing
And strutting back and forth
Like hens and roosters
While the horses die

At the end of the day
The killing floor
Is slick and red
With
Blood
Of our horses
And the smell
Of fear and
Death
Is everywhere

Outside the pens
Are full of
More horses
Waiting
Scared
Hungry
Thirsty
Hurt
Waiting
To be
Killed
Tomorrow

Meanwhile
In Washington,
Another day of
Accomplishing
NOTHING
Except
They have..

They have
With all their
Long winded
Ramblings
Killed
Our horses.

The blood of the horses
Stains our land
And curses
Our nation

We are a government
Of
Whores
Selling
Our horses
For
A foreign
Dinner plate

One nation
Under God ?
No
I am
Sick
And
Weary
And my
Heart
Is torn
In
Pieces
For the horses
Who suffer
And die

The horse
Must win
This war
And
We
Must
Never
Give
Up

Heavenly Father, Great Spirit, whose voice we hear in the winds, hear our cries, hear our
prayers for the horses.
Amen..

Oh Harriette;;;;;;;;;wow. your poem takes my breath away. thank you for capturing all our thoughts and placing them in this terse, controlled, extremely angry observation of the American Congress in action. (Or not in action....god be with all our horses help them to die quickly. This is all we can pray for at this point. How wretched that this is all we have to wish for on this, another kill day in Illinois, in Canada, in Mexico.)

Harriette....so true...my friend....I think each person in Congress should have a copy....to really know that they are a parade, and not doing the heart of what the people really wanted...pass this bill.

Talk about "speaking truth to power"!!!! Your poem says it perfectly. The petty, political gamesmanship that we are witnessing while horses continue to die is shameful, yet they feel no shame, only pride in their ability to stall the system. Thank you for contrasting the pride and shame in your poem.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

Thanks to everyone for their concern about the bridge collapse in Minneapolis. A friend and I drove under the bridge apparently about a minute before it collapsed. We were heading to The Guthrie Theater, about three blocks away and on the west side of the river. The Guthrie has an outdoor cantilevered bridge from which we had a good view of the terrible destruction. TV now reports a reduced death toll of four, still too many, but we know it will rise with recovery efforts in the river. This is so shocking and sad.

Posted by: Catherine in MN at August 2, 2007 2:45 PM

Our own Becky in MN is alright (Becky & Angel Chip). I emailed her late last night and I read this morning that she is FINE. She lives near the bridge but does not use it to travel to/from work. PHEW!

I had not read last night on TWR and had written Laurie H and Leslie in MN before I read that they also were okay. (and Daryl Smoliak too)PHEW!

Has the other MN FOB checked in yet? It is very worrisome not knowing. I have not family there but I cannot watch the footage, as it is so upsetting it beyond depresses me, causing uncontrollable crying. (I have bad phobia of bridges)

Prayers to all families, friends and anyone involved directly or indirectly in tyhe MN bridge collapse. Please know that we are all praying and thinking of you in this time of need and desperation.

Prayers to ALL creatures great and small

I am so glad you and your family are not harmed in this tragedy. It is overwhelming and horrible to see on tv, cannot imagine in "real-life" how gut wrenching it would be. Thanks for letting us know that you are fine and alright today. Prayers and blessing to you.

LInda J. in MN - (reading from last night) Thanks for letting us know that you too, were not harmed in the collapse. I meant to write first thing this morning to you, but got sidetracked with emails. I had to check on Becky in MN first before coming here to read. Thank goodness you are all okay.

I dreamed that we could get horse slaughter stopped.
But we had to speak WITH the horses, not just for them, to them, and at them.
They know how it must be achieved.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at August 2, 2007 3:06 PM

Where are all the Barbaro cheerleaders?

After watching C-SPAN we need all the help we can get.
The pro slaughter people have big lobbyist, and think if they keep the bill in house long enough we will go away.
WE will get discouraged and stop making noise and go away. And their money keeps coming in.

Now think about the horses standing in the kill box, the ones at feedlots, the ones waiting at the slaughter plants, and the ones standing in the trucks heading to Cavel, Mexico and Canada.
They wait for a kind sole to save them, too love them. Waiting for some water and a little feed.

Yes I think about that and I think about Joe who buys a horse from a Killer and then he has to go away.
It’s wrong, I for one can’t go away! We are closer today than ever in stopping horse slaughter.
So pick your self up, brush yourself off and "call"! Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Feel sorry for the horses!
Who don’t know, or understand why they are, where they are!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at August 2, 2007 3:07 PM

##### Dora,

You are so kind! Thank you for your concern. I am still rather stunned.
