Bio

I live in the beautiful area of Poland Village in Northeast Ohio, an area known for its connection to the Connecticut Western Reserve. It is one of the few places nearby where one can own a horse and keep it stabled at home. It is an area rich in history. It is near Youngstown where I was born and raised. I attended Youngstown State University, home of the YSU Penguins football team [1]. I'm a huge fan. I have a Masters in English from there and had planned on pursuing my PhD and teaching college. There was a glut of college teachers at the time. After teaching a few freshman classes, I was attracted to the career of librarianship. I have worked at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County [2]for over 30 years and am currently Manager of Adult Services in the administration. I have a Master's in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. I love reading--it goes with the territory. I like mysteries, books about the famous horses (Seabiscuit is a favorite), books about Mt. Everest, books set in Venice, and history. I love music and support the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. One of the main attractions in our area is Mill Creek Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country. If you ever visit, it is well worth the trip [3]. I am married and have 3 beautiful male cats, all rescues [4](The cats, not the husband, are rescues although sometimes I wonder). Left to right: Claude Monet, Lester, Petey DeLuce.

Horse experience

I do not own a horse but have loved them since I was a little girl. I, like many others, watched the Lone Ranger and other westerns and enjoyed the horses. I have a close friend who owns her own farm and stable in the countryside outside Poland. She boards horses, own thoroughbreds, and teaches dressage. I was lucky enough to see her mare foal. I am also lucky to have experienced Secretariat win the Triple Crown and am still in awe of him. I am currently reading, Secretariat: the Horse God Built. I also love Seabiscuit. I fell in love with Barbaro too. I have learned a lot about horses and the issues facing them from all of you and Alex.

FOB activities

I have accessed TWR since Barbaro won the Derby and signed on to the Forum in early August. I still continue to check the site every day. I have supported the Barbaro Fund at New Bolton, the birthday celebration last summer for Dr. R, the Christmas party and tree ornament fundraiser at Christmas, contributed to Barbaro's Christmas halter and treats at Christmas, the Valentines for the Missouri horses rescued in the accident, the birthday parties for Michael Matz and Edgar, the bench at New Bolton, the art print for Dr. R., the Barbaro birthday fundraiser, and the Mother's Day and Father's Day tributes for the Jacksons. I am currently sponsoring Sweetie [5]. All of these, I was honored and glad to be a part of but now after Barbaro's death, I feel I need to focus more on the rescue organizations. Their need for funds is ongoing. I am also a member of the Ohio Herd working toward the anti-slaughter bill. I love reading all of the posts about the horses and the success stories. I loved reading about Cody's adventures and feel his loss too. I love little Ernie too. I plan to join the Friends of New Bolton. Here is the top of Barbaro's Christmas tree at New Bolton:

FOB Network

I was not able to attend the Birthday Celebration for Barbaro but was lucky enough to meet an FOB who lives less than 2 miles from me, Debbie! (My name shortened is Debby and I go by Deborah, esp on the forum). We had breakfast and shared our experiences, exchanged Barbaro books, and plan to meet again. I also keep in contact and would love to meet someday Michelle, our Ohio group leader (Michelle GBI) and Rosemary, our creative planner of celebrations and supporter of the rescues and all that is Barbaro's legacy (Gannonrose). There are other FOBs in the Akron/Cleveland area too. Ohio loves horses!
