Bio
My husband and I operate a small farm in south Central Michigan. We have our own horses, and we rescue when we have room, and can afford to, or at times when we feel that we have to. I assist with Dog Rescue, help do transport, and try to network for horses in need in order to help find safe homes, or to prevent them from "falling through the cracks."
Horse experience
I have had horses all my life. I started riding at the tender age of 1 and a half, when I figured out that if I took an ear of corn to the fence, the pony would come close enough for me to climb aboard. I gave my mother many a scare in my younger years, until she figured out how I was managing to climb on that pony...
I continued on with horses, enjoying a successful 4-H career, with the help of a horse that was rescued from the Shipshewana Kill pen at a price of 15 cents per pound. I bought her with my own money, and when I brought her home, my mother wouldn't let me turn her out in daylight, for fear that we would be turned in to humane authorities. She had no hair due to mange, and was for the most part, a skeleton with skin stretched over it. She was 3 years old at the time, and I was 12. By the time that she turned 5, she was a beautiful golden palomino who loved me with all her heart. We won many State and Local awards, and she carried me my entire 4-H career.
I then paid back the lessons learned in 4-H by becoming a horse leader for a brief time, managed a riding stable, and then moved to Colorado, where I continued by helping my father on his ranch, and working at an Arabian farm, where I learned to ride english. I later moved back to Michigan to care for my Grandmother, who was dying of cancer.
Currently, I am chief caretaker of the horses on our farm, and do all training here at home. I employ natural horsemanship practices, and encourage the horses to become willing partners with their humans. Jeff and I have raised some very nice foals, and I hope to begin showing them soon. ''
FOB activities
Identify rescues you support, other activities you have undertaken on TWR sites, what you have learned through following Barbaro and FOBs etc.
I am very active with Horsefeathers Equine Rescue, in Guthrie Oklahoma, assisting with whatever is needed to help provide for the horses - posting pictures, providing updates, and moral support whenever needed.
I recently had my own thread, initially to attempt to find a home for a baby belgian whom I affectionately dubbed "Willie". After arriving at the farm to pick him up, it became apparent that he would not be able to travel anywhere, so I attempted to provide care for him at home. Unfortunately, his injuries, and starvation were so severe, he did not survive. It was a stunning blow to many FOB's who had come to love him as much as we did. Never in my life have I had such an outpouring of love and support as we all rallied round baby Willie. I have made many life long friends here, and appreciate every single one of them.
I have participated in fundraising for the Savedahorses Rescues for Donations Drive, an auction save at Centennial Auction, and posted horses in need in the hopes that FOB's in the area of the country that they were in would be able to help.
On March 21, 2008, I participated in the Shipshewana Good Friday save, in which we pulled 15 horses from the direct to slaughter pens... Rehoming of the remaining horses is still underway.
