Description of Rescue
Orphan Acres Equine Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Sanctuary is a private, non-profit (501(c)3)) farm in Viola, ID. Established in 1975, we have rescued over 2,000 horses, and have successfully placed over 1600 of them in loving, responsible homes. We are also a wildlife rehabilitation facility, and have helped elk, deer, small birds, and raptors. Currently we have 65 horses. We have had as many as 132 at one time. Our horse numbers fluctuate rapidly, right now about 30 horses are in the permanent sanctuary herd, and about 35 are in rehab or adoptable. We even rescued one of the horses from the movie[2] "Dances With Wolves". We don't foster horses.
Adopters are screened and sign a contract. The State of Idaho requires the horse to remain with the adopter for 2 years before it may be sold/re-homed. All horses leave with a state of Idaho brand inspection certificate. Horses are adopted out for their "board bill" at a rate of $3.00 per day. The minimum is $100, as per the State of Idaho requirements.
Our horses come to us from court seizures, sheriff referrals, Humane organizations, and private individuals. They come mainly from the Northwest, but have come from as far away as Vermont.
Our sanctuary horses are allowed to live out thier lives until it is deemed they no longer have quality of life. Then, they are humanely euthanized. Many of our elderly horses pass away quietly. On Thanksgiving Day, 2007, our oldest horse died while a handful of volunteers were brushing him. What a way to go.
Volunteers and visitors are always welcome, we do request that you call and set a time with us for your first visit. There are certain days/ times of day that are very hectic here. We are fortunate to be located near the [3]University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, and [4]Washington State University in Pullman, [5]Washington. We get many of our volunteers from [6]university [7]student groups[8]. We log an average of 20,000 volunteer hours every year. Our volunteers get hands-on experience with foals up to very geriatric horses. We have horse shoeing classes, dentistry and veterinary demonstrations, and hold horsemanship clinics for the volunteers.
We do community outreach in so many ways! We host church groups, 4-H and FFA, upward bound, scouting, YMCA, and Americorps. We also have programs working with the disabled.
At Orphan Acres there is no paid staff or employees. Therefore, 100% of all donations go directly to the care and upkeep of the horses.
