Description of Rescue

R.E.A.S.O.N is a registered 501(c)3 horse rescue and adoption specializing in re-homing Standardbreds off the track from Pocono Downs. Lisa Smith began the organization 9 years ago after working for the now defunct Harness Horse Retirement and seeing the need for a place for horses to go. We are located in Northeast Pennsylvania but serve all our surrounding areas including New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

I have been involved heavily with REASON since September 2003. I basically handle any promotion of the rescue, create and update their website as well as saddle break and work with many of the horses that come in.

As a rescue, our goal is to educate on proper care of the horse and we work on matching the horse to the adopter. We work with local girl scout groups and hold education seminars for them. We are working on forming stronger relationships with the local Humane Societies and SPCA's in our area to form an alliance in helping horses.

We are open daily and visits are by appointment only except on Sunday's from 12pm - 5pm which we have declared our volunteer days. We encourage people to get involved and spend time with our horses. It's been a wonderful source for kids who want to have a horse and for parents to really educate what it takes to own a horse.

Many of our horses come from Pocono Downs but we also take in horses from private owners who can no longer care for their horse. We also work with area Humane Societies and have been known to take their seizures. There have been occasions where we get calls on horses in the area being neglected and we have stepped into ask the owners to sign them over and have gotten the authorities involved as well.

FOB Horses

With the help of the FOB's, we made it through a scarce hay winter in 2007 with our holiday card fund drive that will be an annual event. We successfully were able to purchase two starved horses, Major & Sophie, and get them rehabbed and now are looking for new homes.

Feedback from FOBs
